CHIMPANZEE SANCTUARY NORTHWEST

Meet Negra . . . In Her New Home

At Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, Negra can look forward to the pleasures that each new day will bring. She has her favorite foods, comfortable nests of blankets and straw, and the warmth of the afternoon sun. She has a family of chimpanzees for grooming and playing and a growing group of humans who care for her. At the sanctuary, Negra can truly enjoy being alive.

There was a time when Negra had little reason for hope. Records indicate that she was captured in Africa as an infant in 1973. She was brought to the United States and put into biomedical testing. She spent the next three and a half decades living in small cages at one lab or another. She had at least three children taken from her, some just minutes after birth.

Scribbled notes in her file tell that she was in complete isolation, solitary confinement, between March 31, 1986 and January 14, 1988 because one of the labs thought she might have an infectious disease. This turned out to be a mistake. The notation on 1/14/88 is, “Enter cage #28. By herself. Home again.”

Thanks to support from foundations like the Tony Stewart Foundation and generous individuals, cage #28 will never be Negra’s home again.

All of the chimpanzees at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest: Negra, Burrito, Foxie, Jamie, Jody, Annie and Missy will spend their remaining years in a spacious home full of exciting things to do everyday.

Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest provides lifetime quality care for formerly abused or exploited chimpanzees, while advocating for great apes through education and collaboration. The sanctuary is located on a farm in the Cascade mountain range, east of Seattle. CSNW is one of only a handful of sanctuaries in the country that cares for chimpanzees.
