SPOTLIGHT CHARITIES |
For 2011, the board of the Tony Stewart Foundation – and that includes our favorite #14 driver – wanted to do something a bit different with awarding funding grants. The new program – Tony's Grant Accelerator – was established to encourage fans to nominate a charity they believe is providing programs or services to children or animals in an extraordinary manner.
More than 300 nominations were received during April & May. Following review of the nominations, TSF extended an invitation to 72 organizations to complete a Full Grant Application. From those applicants, the TSF board and staff reviewed each organization using a process of scoring based on the (a) overall merit & strength of the program or project for which TSF grant funds would be used; (b) percentage of funds dedicated directly to mission (non-administrative costs); (c) organization's unique or "stand-out" characteristic compared to similar organizations; (d) geographic diversity; (e) evidence of collaboration with other non-profit organizations or community partners; (f) evidence of innovative fundraising and marketing practices, and (g) proportion of paid staff to volunteers.
It was not an easy task to select the 40 Accelerator Charities presented below. It was a heart-warming process to learn about so many different organizations located throughout the United States that are providing outstanding service to critically or chronically ill children and to animals which are homeless, abused or endangered. Together, the 40 Accelerator Charities represent 18 different states and a few thousand volunteers who, along with small-to medium sized staffs, are providing unique services. We hope that you will enjoy using the TSF Spotlight Charities page as a "jumping off point" and visit the web sites for these great organizations. Simply click their logo and you'll understand why the TSF board and staff selected each one as a 2011 Accelerator Charity!

CIGA is staffed entirely by volunteers and funded by donations, grants and sales, plus the volunteers who give up their time, energy and resources for the greyhounds. Volunteers receive no compensation for their work other than the true joy of seeing greyhounds united with their loving families.
CIGA is not a first-time TSF Grant recipient. In 2010, the organization received $5,000 and their stewardship of the donation was impeccable. The TSF board and staff enjoyed receiving photographs of the greyhounds sporting their casts plus a copy of the itemized medical/surgical bills.

EMAR is the only animal rescue group in East-Central Mississippi. Every day, a small group of dedicated volunteers fight for the rights of neglected, abandoned and abused animals. Families For
HoPE, Inc.
More than 200 volunteers are the backbone of Families for HoPE (INDIANA) founded in 2006. Together they work to provide support and education to the families of infants and children diagnosed with holoprosencephaly (HPE) and raise awareness of HPE in the medical community and among the general public. HPE, a rare congenital brain malformation, is a condition without a cure or standard course of treatment.
Upon diagnosis, many families prepare for eminent death, but if their child survives then specialized medical care is a necessity. Through the distribution of education materials, providing parent-to-parent support and hosting national conferences, Families for HoPE empowers families to hope and cope with their daily care and needs.
Mayor Gregory Ballard proclaimed the week of July 7, 2008 as "Holoprosencephaly Awareness Week" in Indiana recognizing the 2nd Bi-Annual Family Conference on HPE.
The TSF Grant Accelerator Award of $2,000 will be used for to help underwrite expenses associated with the annual HPE Family & Medical Conference to be held July 2012 in Concord, North Carolina.

A special tradition at our Bi-Annual Families for HoPE Conference is releasing a single balloon in honor of each child with HPE who is no longer with their family.

Ed and his daughter Maeve from Cape Cod, MA found new friends in Marissa and her mother Molly who are from Seattle, WA. They met each other and 50 other families from across the country and around the world at the Families for HoPE Bi-Annual Conference in 2010.

Organized in 2005, Friends of Ferdinand (INDIANA) brought together volunteers who had compassion for ex-racehorses and knew they had a second career beyond the track. The autumn marks the end of the Indiana racing season; a time when owners and trainers consider that some horses will continue their racing career, and others will not. For those horses whose career is ending, there are few options. The all-volunteer structure of FFI has worked tirelessly with the Indiana equine community, the Indiana racing community and the public at large to share their mission and their vision. Together, extraordinary ex-racers have transitioned from the track and who have been rehabilitated, retrained and have found new homes. These thoroughbreds are "retired from racing but not from life".

KEYS
KEYS (NEW YORK) has been capturing the hearts of children with cancer since 2001. It was founded by former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Official David Bennett and his wife, Colleen, after losing Colleen's father to cancer. Music had such a positive effect on her father's quality of life during his battle, they created
KEYS to help children facing the same difficult time in their lives. As a result, thousands of kids throughout the Northeast region in children's hospitals, special needs sites, children's camps and in hospice care have experienced the soothing songs of hope that KEYS provide.
KEYS musicians perform small concerts and at the bedsides of patients, sharing their gift of music with each child and the family. And, so the music can continue to heal their heart, each child is given a "Hearts of Hope" care package that includes a music album, a resource book on music therapy and a cuddly stuffed animal to hug. Imagine about 5,000 children each year receiving this wonderful, healing gift of music!

PAWS of Hertford County
Begun in 2007, the mission of PAWS of Hertford County (NORTH CAROLINA) is to make its community a more humane place for homeless, abused, and neglected animals through increased spaying and neutering, high-quality sheltering, conscientious adoptions, public education and animal welfare advocacy.
The background story on PAWS bears repeating as it clearly demonstrates that it takes only will power to make a difference. Two women from Mufreesboro, NC decided they had to take a stand against the high kill rate at the county shelter. A community humane society was created after these women were granted permission by the Hertford County Commissioners to take over the shelter. In the first four years, more than 4,000 cats & dogs were adopted or transferred to other rescue groups!
PAWS specializes in hard-to-place animals either due to breed or medical condition. When in another facility such animals are often routinely euthanized, PAWS works to train and treat these cats and dogs so they can be more easily adopted.
Providing a low-cost spay/neuter program is a top priority for PAWS. Started in November 2008 through December 2010, PAWS was able to have 1,582 dogs, puppies, cats & kittens altered. Volunteers provide free transportation to encourage pet owners to use this valuable service.
In April 2011, Bertie County awarded PAWS with their "Disaster Relief Certificate" when volunteers worked together to help its neighboring county after a deadly tornado. Through PAWS affiliation with Petsmart, Petco and the Norfolk SPCA, volunteers coordinated donations of food, crates, beds, kennels and more.
The TSF Grant Accelerator Award of $5,000 will be used for to fund three months of spay-neuter services.

Shangri-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding
Established in 1987, Shangri-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding (TENNESSEE) is the largest and only accredited therapeutic riding program in southeast Tennessee. STAR serves children and adults from Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Fentress, Knox, Loudon, Jefferson, Monroe, McMinn, Roane, and Sevier counties. Clients range in age from four years old to seniors with physical, mental and neurological disabilities or those considered at-risk. STAR provided 4,565 lessons for 252 participants in 2010

Programs include the Lesson Patron, Therapeutic Riding, Minis in Motion, Changing Strides and Horses for Heroes. Each program is designed to provide services at an affordable rate. Each program engages more than 400 volunteers who work with the clients and the horses to achieve outstanding results.
In February 2010, East Tennessee Public Television (ETPtv) granted the "Be More Award for Local Service" to STAR for demonstrating outstanding achievement and an extraordinary approach for engaging the community through volunteers and retention.

Begun in 1999, Team Greyhound Adoption of Ohio (OHIO) is an all-volunteer group dedicated to placing retired racing greyhounds into adoption in most of Ohio and parts of adjacent states. Since 1999, these volunteers have successful placed more than 1,500 greyhounds.
Without question, the most distinguishing feature of this rescue group is greyhounds are initially placed within several Central Ohio prisons for a 90-day period to be evaluated and taught obedience commands. This training ensures a secure match with the adoptive families through their training in socialization, basic obedience, and house manners. The prison inmates who have been instructed and serve as trainers benefit greatly from their responsibility. These men and women learn compassion and experience success while providing a service back to the community.
The racers reside in foster homes after graduation from their training program, where they have an opportunity to be shown at meet-n-greets throughout Ohio. At any given time between 40 and 60 greyhounds are available for adoption allowing choices of a variety of temperaments, sizes, and colors. All appropriate veterinary care -- including altering, vaccinations, worming, and micro-chipping -- has been provided each greyhound.
The TSF Grant Accelerator Award of $5,000 will be used for expenses related to expanding the marketing and volunteer recruitment program in order to service more greyhounds.
